The Chairman's January 2008 Newsletter

Dear FSC Supporters

It is hard to believe that barely a year ago eight FSC stalwarts formed a committee with the intention of reviving the fortunes of the company. Through work pressures, two members had reluctantly to resign leaving six of us to organise, from page to stage, our production of The Taming of the Shrew. It was quite a challenge, but everyone put their backs into it resulting in a fine production attended by excellent houses. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the committee, the cast, the backstage crew and the many members of the society who helped us in myriad ways, for their dedication and hard work.

The success of The Shrew has encouraged us to put on further productions and events in 2008. It is has been decided to stage a production of The Merry Wives of Windsor in the autumn, again in the Bourne Hall. Until our finances are more solid, it was felt that it would be sensible to continue with an indoor production for the time being. We are hoping to arrange a read-through of the play in February to which everyone is welcome. It must be stressed that this will NOT be an audition but a chance to read and/or to listen to the play purely for pleasure. Auditions will take place in late spring, dates to follow in a future newsletter.

We would like to stage a fund-raising event in early summer in order to swell our bank balance prior to the main production. Subject to our obtaining a licence, we are hoping to stage extracts from The Shakespeare Revue compiled by Christopher Luscombe and Malcolm McKee. This a collection of highly amusing musical numbers and short sketches originally presented by the RSC as part of the International Shakespeare Festival at the Barbican in 1994. We would need 10/12 actors in total for this (equal numbers of men and women), and, most importantly, a pianist. If you would like to take part, please contact me by phone on 01252 713721 or by email on annwake@postmaster.co.uk.

We are hoping to organise a trip to the Globe once its season gets underway. If you are interested in joining in, please let Margot Tringham know.

Jeremy Newton has offered to organise a trip to the Roundhouse to see one or more of the Histories which recently transferred from Stratford. Please contact him directly if you are interested.

The Annual General Meeting of the FSC will be held in the Studio Room at the United Reformed Church, South Street, Farnham on Tuesday, January 29th 2008 at 7.30p.m. Details are attached with this newsletter. Please come along to the meeting – the support of our membership is vital to the success of the company.

On behalf of the committee, I should like to wish all our members a very happy and prosperous New Year. We look forward to your continued support and hope to see you at one of our events.
