The Chairman's November Newsletter
Dear FSC Supporters
Since my last newsletter the FSC
has been involved in two main events, both of which were highly
successful.
NATIONAL HERITAGE OPEN DAY
Having secured the new bandstand
in Gostrey Meadows for our contribution to this event, several
members of the Company put on a varied programme of speeches,
songs and amusing sketches from the works of the Bard. We had
good audiences for both performances, and good weather too which
made the occasion even more enjoyable. Thanks go to all those
who bravely took part at such short notice.
MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
Last month, Ian Cullen with all the
cast and crew produced a memorable interpretation of Much Ado
About Nothing. The setting at the end of World War One made a
welcome change from the traditional doublet and hose versions,
proving that Shakespeare's plays can be adapted to all periods
without loss of understanding or enjoyment. It was encouraging
to see so many new faces on stage; good to see so many familiar
ones too! Judging by the many complimentary comments we received,
the play went down well with the audiences. A big thank you to
all involved.
EVENTS FOR 2010
School For Scandal
by
Richard Brinsley Sheridan
Ellis Nicholls, a member of both
the FSC and the Bourne Players, is planning to stage a modern-dress
version of Sheridan's play in the Bourne Hall from 14th - 17th
April 2010. He has asked the two companies to collaborate over
this production, something to which the FSC committee happily
agreed. As far as possible, the two companies will share equally
the responsibilities and costs of the production and of course
the profits. This means that we will be helping to provide actors,
backstage help, front-of-house and box office help, set-building
help etc. This should prove to be an interesting venture especially
at a time when many amateur companies are struggling to survive.
Please give the show your support.
For those who would like to act in
the play, read-throughs and auditions take place in the Studio
Room at the United Reformed Church in South Street, Farnham on
Sunday 6th December from 3.00 pm - 5.00 pm and on Monday 7th December
from 7.30 pm - 9.00 pm. All are welcome whether or not you want
to audition for a part. Ellis is away until about the 25th November
after which he can be contacted for more details by email on
c-nicholls@btinternet.com.
Summer Production 2010
A Midsummer Night's Dream
We are hoping to stage the Dream
in the Performing Arts Centre at Frensham Heights School in July
2010.
SOCIAL EVENT FOR 2010
Alan Bennett's new play, The Habit of Art, has just opened at
the National Theatre to sell-out audiences. More tickets for the
end of January onwards are being released this week. Margot Tringham
is going to buy 10 tickets for a Saturday matinee, so if you would
like to see this play, please contact her as soon as possible.
The cast includes Michael Gambon,
Alex Jennings and Frances de la Tour.
Annual General Meeting
Our AGM will be held in the Studio
Room at the United Reformed Church in South Street, Farnham on
Wednesday, January 27th 2010 at 8pm. Please make a note of the
date in your diary now. All current and prospective members are
very welcome - we would appreciate a good turn-out.
SALLY WAGHORN
Many of you will already know that we are about to lose Sally
not just from the stage but also from the committee. I would therefore
like to say a little bit about her importance to the FSC and how
much she will be missed.
Sally has contributed so much the
FSC it is difficult to know where to start. I got to know Sally
back in the mid 1990s when she first started to perform with the
company; she has been one of our most consistently talented actresses
ever since. She has taken lead parts in innumerable productions
and has never disappointed us with her performances as Rosalind,
Portia, Adriana, Beatrice, to name just a few. She was too a vital
part of the Shakespeare Revue. Who can ever forget the gusto with
which she, along with Hilary Lee-Corbin, led the audience in the
French Lesson?
Sally tackles everything she does
with great enthusiasm and dedication. This is apparent not only
in her acting but also in her work on the committee of which she
is, until the AGM, the Treasurer. Not content with handling our
finances, she has always undertaken the design and printing of
the posters advertising our shows, organised the design and printing
of our programmes and tickets, and generally overseen all aspects
of our publicity. She has taken responsibility for the costumes
and even persuaded her poor mother to act as costume mistress.
To say she has been my right-hand woman is to underestimate her
true contribution to the FSC.
We wish her, Mark and Sarah all happiness
in their new home in Haslemere, and envy the Haslemere Players
their newest recruit!
I hope to see many of you at the
AGM in January.
Kindest regards,
Ann Wake
